Your Honor

It’s no wonder that this legal thriller has been optioned for an American remake. This television series, set in modern-day Israel, is reminiscent of HBO’s The Night After in its gripping portrayal of a well-meaning family ensnared in Israel’s underworld. The three episodes, which won the Grand Prix at the prestigious French television festival Series Mania, depict Micah Alkobi, a rising-star judge about to run for a powerful new office, when his troubled teenaged son, Shai, is involved in a hit-and-run accident. It turns out the motorcyclist Shai hits is the son of the head of a notoriously violent Israeli crime family. Since its members have so often been on the wrong end of the judge’s rulings, they would very likely kill Shai if they knew of his involvement. While the series centers around Alkobi, some of the best scenes involve the women who confront him: his mother-in-law, as well as a young lawyer protégé drawn into the case and a police detective who begins to suspect him. As the plot unfolds, the series’ title, Your Honor, takes on a double meaning, as the judge discovers just how many laws he’s willing to break in order to shield his son from harm. —Emily Kaiser Thelin
