Lies in the Closet

Twenty two-year old Or, the son of a conservative Israeli family, has a secret. He tells his parents that he got accepted into Oxford and asks them to write a check for his expenses abroad. Little do they realize that he is lying and actually plans to go to Thailand to use the money for gender reassignment surgery. While conducting his deceitful activities, Or enlists filmmaker Shirly Berkovitz to document his painful journey from man to woman as well as his attempt to reconcile with his family after the fact. Lies in the Closet, like Or’s path, is definitely unusual, yet it captures the audience’s attention and empathy. As Or says, justifying his shameful actions that would pave the way to his personal redemption, “Friends and family who know me as what I’m not, don’t truly know me. How can I call them family, Mom and Dad, if they don’t really know me?”
