SFJFF has prided itself on being at the forefront of dedicated community action and it's commitment to social justice. When we launched Take Action Day in 2013 to present the work of filmmakers who see their films as part of a larger mission to inspire personal and societal transformation, Debra Chasnoff was there. A fixture in the Bay Area community, Debra was an activist, fluent in the language of filmmaking, she trained her camera on issues related to improving the lives of children and families, especially those marginalized in the LGBT community. From bullying to gender to sexuality, Debra was unafraid to tackle difficult topics and to live her life truthfully. When she received her Academy Award in 1992 for Deadly Deception, she thanked her wife and in doing so, became the first Academy Award winning woman to acknowledge a same sex partnership. So, when Debra is diagnosed with stage-4 breast cancer, she faces injustice as always, with her camera. With the help of her wife Nancy, her sons, and their extended LGBTQ+ family, she traces a journey through the twists and turns of living with cancer. From doctor’s appointments to chemo to bucket list moments of joy, what emerges is a raw, intimate portrait of shifting relationships and identities — a story about hanging onto people you love, as you prepare to let them go. Please join us as we honor the life and work of an indomitable woman who touched the lives of many.
