Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House

Ruthie and Connie are Jewish grandmothers who are lesbians and national heroines. They spend much of their lives “doing the right thing” – until they discover it isn’t right for them. By taking risks and challenging values they add a powerful chapter to the dialogue on the meaning of family in America today. Set against the backdrop of working-class Jewish Brooklyn and framed by the emergence of feminism and gay liberation, this powerful film reveals that revolutions are often made up of small, daily decisions. In committing to each other, Ruthie and Connie jettison their previous heterosexual marriages, wound their children, and establish a whole new social life. As activists, they embrace the struggle for dignity and respect, and as lovers they change the course of their lives, paving the way for a significant domestic-partners battle that they eventually win! --Coleman Romalis
