The Optimists, The Story of the Rescue of the Jews of Bulgaria
On March 9, 1943, Jacky Comforty's grandparents and their two young children, along with thousands of Jews, were rounded up for deportation to Treblinka, a death camp in Poland. Jacky's father was already imprisoned in a nearby forced labor camp. As in other parts of Europe, the Comforty's and other Bulgarian Jews were herded into school yards and other gathering places to await the trains that would take them to their death. But this time, the outcome was different. At the end of the day, no one was transported. Instead, the Jews were sent home. Fifty-seven years later, find out how they were saved and what we can learn from their experiences. Who stopped the deportations? What motivated them to act at a time when few people were willing to take risks for their neighbors? What does their story suggest about the ways people today can mobilize to protect human rights?
The Orange at the Seder

Hardly, as revealed in this intimate, fascinating journey inside the two worlds of a remarkable young American immigrant. —Mike Silver
