In Search of the Bene Israel
about Jews in India.
In Silence
From the Czech and Slovak republics comes this poetic and hypnotic exploration of a troubling history: the expulsion and expunging of brilliant Jewish composers and performers following the Nazi invasion. Five artists are profiled in a stylized, beautifully crafted fictionalization that conveys the promise of the 1930s, when classical music and popular jazz were sites of innovation and seduction. Then came the camps, a place of “unbearable silence.” JB
In the Beginning: Once Upon A Time...There Were Arab Jews
About This Film
In the Family
Filmmaker Joanna Rudnick was 27 years old when she discovered she had BRCA—a genetic mutation that is particularly high among Ashkenazi Jewish women. We join Rudnick as she struggles with an impossible decision—whether to remove her healthy breasts and ovaries or risk a staggeringly high likelihood of developing a deadly cancer. The result is a powerful and gripping documentary that is as life-affirming as it is heartbreaking.
In the Garden of Tulips
Set amongst the backdrop of the Iran-Iraq war, Sharif and his fifteen year old daughter, Caroline take their last car ride together before her life is changed forever.
In the Image: Palestinian Women Capture the Occupation
Bay Area filmmakers (Oscar-nominated Judith Montell and Emmy Scharlatt, in her feature directorial debut) profile the Camera Project from Jerusalem-based human rights watchdog group B’Tselem. By providing Palestinians in the Occupied Territories with inexpensive video cameras and film training this organization has empowered them to document human rights violations and provide evidence to the public and to Israeli authorities. Interviews filmed by three Palestinian women highlight this striking documentary. Preceded by Mirror Image
In the Night Kitchen
About This Film
In the Shadow
In this gripping contemporary film noir set in Prague in 1953, a hard-working Czech police detective suspects that a run-of-the-mill jewelry store heist may be part of a secret state-controled plot to discredit the city’s Jewish community. His persistence sets him on a dangerous collision course with his superiors and with an entire Soviet-influenced security network, possibly imperiling his livelihood, his family and his life.

About This Film
In Treatment
Imagine you are in therapy and your shrink is a thoughtful, badly dressed bear of a man who resembles Israeli actor Assi Dayan. Then imagine that when your shrink goes to talk to his shrink, it’s Israeli grande dame of cinema, Gila Almagor. Are you dreaming? No, you’re enjoying the afterglow of Israel’s brilliant television series In Treatment (B’Tipul), source of HBO’s hit remake: five episodes a week focusing on five different people on the couch.

About This Film
Incessant Visions- Letters From an Architect
This artful documentary illuminates the life and work of German Jewish Expessionist architect Erich Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn’s story unfolds through letters exchanged with his wife Luise, both German Jewish emigres fleeing Nazism. Director Dror deftly juxtaposes the architect’s original drawings with contemporary views of his buildings, weaving in interviews with architects and the people who use these unique structures—a testament to the integrity and timelessness of visionary design.

About This Film
An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power
While many sequels do not live up to their predecessors, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is a rare exception. A decade after An Inconvenient Truth, local filmmakers Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk follow Vice President Al Gore as he continues his tireless efforts to alert the human inhabitants of this planet to the catstrophic consequences of climate change and the urgency to take action.
Indignation
The award-winning writer and producer James Schamus (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain) crafts a poignant and faithful adaptation of Philip Roth’s Indignation as his directorial debut. Hailed by Roth himself as the best film adaptation of his work, Indignation is a moving portrait of Marcus Messner, the son of a Kosher butcher who sets off for college in 1950’s Ohio and finds his atheist self at odds with its Christian Midwestern culture.- Lexi LebanScreened at 2016 Sundance Film Festival
Ingelore
As a deaf Jew in 1930s Germany, Ingelore Herz Honigstein was an outcast twice over. Frank Stiefel’s portrait of his mother is both a loving tribute and a remarkable feat of compressed storytelling, as Ingelore narrates in speech and sign the harrowing events leading up to her immigration to America.

About This Film
Inside Out
This South African film is a romantic tale by award winning Director Neal Sundstrom. When Hazel Levin, a fast-talking, street wise Jewish girl hits town, her arrival is akin to the small town of Eden being struck by a meteor. The inhabitants are forced to examine the validity of that which they have always accepted at face value. By the same token, Hazel starts to re-examine her own life and in doing so is faced with a nagging suspicion; despite her convictions, she has missed the point. In shaking up the town, she inadvertently forces her own demons to the surface and slowly realizes that change is indeed a two way street.

About This Film
Intent to Destroy
One hundred years after 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire, Academy Award–nominated documentarian and this year’s Freedom of Expression Award recipient Joe Berlinger reveals the disturbing truth behind Turkey’s well-funded campaign of genocide denial, suppression and intimidation. Berlinger utilizes the filming of The Promise, a $100 million Hollywood film production ambitiously billed as the Armenian Schindler’s List, to explore this historical tragedy and its relevance to the barbaric genocides that followed.

About This Film
Intimate Grammar
Aharon, the teenage son of the dysfunctional Kleinfeld family of early 1960s Jerusalem, refuses to grow up, instead cultivating an exaggerated inner world in Nir Bergman’s poignant feature, based on a 1991 novel by David Grossman. Both author (See Under: Love, Someone to Run With) and filmmaker (Broken Wings, In Treatment) excel at telling a moving story from the point of view of a troubled adolescent.

About This Film
Invisible
Lily and Nira share a terrible bond: They were both victims of a serial rapist in the 1970s. A chance encounter brings them together 20 years after they identified their attacker in a police lineup. Based on real-life events, Invisible builds slowly, like a crackling bonfire. Veteran documentary filmmaker Michal Aviad makes innovative use of historical footage in her first narrative film and explores the aftershocks of sexual violence with surprising restraint.
