Renée Wilson: The 13th Percent
The 13th Percent is a personal documentary exploring filmmaker Renée Wilson’s unexpected discovery of her non-Jewish African American family’s 13% Ashkenazi Jewish heritage in a 2018 DNA report, which the report attributed to either a grandparent or a great grandparent. The revelation offered a tantalizing clue to a longstanding family mystery, the identity of Wilson’s paternal great-grandfather and his family.
Reprise
In February 1953, the Soviet government brought famous writers, filmmakers, musicians, and scientists to the office of Pravda. These men had one thing in common; they were Jewish. "Asked" by Stalin’s henchmen to sign a petition for the deportation of Soviet Jews to the East, many signed and then struggled for the rest of their lives with the knowledge that they had betrayed their principles. This documentary illuminates one of the most painful chapters in the history of Russian Jewry.

About This Film
Requiem for a Whale
An encounter with a whale’s corpse evokes the witnesses’ thoughts about the dialogue between death and life.
Resist: To Be with The Living
Experience the colorful, volatile history of the Living Theater, New York’s infamous anarchist-pacifist political theater company. Founded in 1947 by Jewish activists Julian Beck and Judith Malina, the company continues to define what it means to create radical art for social change.
Restoration
Yakov Fidelman struggles to hold on to the antique restoration workshop that has been his life’s work. After his longtime business partner dies, Fidelman rejects his estranged son Noah’s idea to close the business and build an apartment complex on the site. Anchored by Sasson Gabay’s (The Band’s Visit) mesmerizing performance, Yossi Madmony’s first feature yields a complex set of frayed character relations for which restoration proves an apt metaphor. Reverence
Batman, Homer Simpson, a New York Yankees logo – you’re likely to see any of these logos on the yarmulke of a Jewish boy in modern Jewish communities today. “Reverence” dissects the meaning and context behind branded kippahs and the concept of faith in a modern world while exploring the societal and religious norms that these garments may challenge, focusing on the notion of “fitting in” and “standing out” within the Reform and Conservative Jewish communities.
Revived

Robert Klein Still Can't Stop His Leg
Like Richard Pryor and George Carlin, he influenced a slew of the next generation of comics, and Robert Klein is still really funny! Klein is shown in his daily routines, providing a privileged look at the great comedian as he jokes about everyday life. Klein appeared on the Tonight Show and Letterman more than 100 times and hosted the third Saturday Night Live, appearing in the famous cheeseburger sketch. His spot-on impression of Rodney Dangerfield and his meeting with Don Rickles are some of the many highlights. Interviews with Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, as well as clips from some of Klein’s seminal routines, round out this delightful portrait.—Jay Rosenblatt
Rock in the Red Zone
On the edge of the Negev Desert, the city of Sderot became the target of near-constant close-range Qassam rockets after Israel’s 2005 disengagement from Gaza. Sderot’s youth found expression for both their anger and their hope in rock music. Drawn by the music’s energy, director Laura Bialis documents Sderot’s efforts to gain attention from Israel’s large cities, long before the summer of 2014, when longer range rockets reached them, too.

A Room and a Half
Veteran animator and documentary filmmaker Andrey Khrzhanovsky’s feature debut is a lyrical masterpiece bursting with images from the life of Russian Jewish poet Joseph Brodsky, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987. Khrzhanovsky skillfully weaves a fictional account of an anonymous visit by an elderly, exiled Brodsky to his native St. Petersburg with the story of his growing up an only child in the rapidly changing post-WWII era.
Roots
This rueful black comedy deftly mines Jewish and Russian stereotypes while mercilessly lampooning them all. Smalltown entrepreneur Edik conjures up a scheme to assist expatriate Russian Jews longing to reconnect with their village roots. But his seemingly noble social service is really a shady grifter’s con, as Edik casts locals as phony, longlost relatives. But working with a town full of absurdly comic loose cannons makes for highly unpredictable results.
Rosenwald
Aviva Kempner’s Rosenwald is the incredible story of Julius Rosenwald, the son of an immigrant peddler who never finished high school, but rose to become the President of Sears. Influenced by the writings of the educator Booker T. Washington, this Jewish philanthropist joined forces with African American communities during the Jim Crow South to build over 5,300 schools during the early part of the 20th century.Rosenwald sheds light on this silent partner of the Pre-Civil Rights Movement. Rosenwald awarded fellowship grants to a who's who of African American intellectuals and artists of his day so that they could pursue their scholarship and art. They included: Marian Anderson, James Baldwin, the father and uncle of civil rights leader Julian Bond, Ralph Bunche, W. E. B. DuBois, Katherine Dunham, Ralph Ellison, John Hope Franklin, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Gordon Parks, Jacob Lawrence and Augusta Savage along with Woody Guthrie.Inspired by the Jewish ideals of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) and a deep concern over racial inequality in America, Julius Rosenwald used his wealth to become one of America’s most effective philanthropists. Rosenwald also built YMCAs and housing for African Americans to address the pressing needs of the Great Migration.

About This Film
Rothschild's Violin
Composer Dimitri Shostakovich lovingly finishes Benjamin Fleishmann's opera after his young student dies fighting in WW II. But this masterwork, infused with Jewish melodies, suffers the consequences of a Soviet Union grown increasingly hostile to a Jewish aesthetic. Rothschild's Violin is a taut narrative that includes this rare one-act opera within the film's main story.
