So Long Are You Young
Why can many Japanese business titans recite the words of an obscure poem by a 19th- century Jewish merchant from Alabama? This eloquent and heartfelt documentary tells the dual story of Samuel Ullman, an unusual Jew from the American South, and his remarkable poem, “Youth,” which inspired a generation of postwar Japanese eager for new watchwords to live by. Preceded by Deborah Kaufman and Alan Snitow’s Ezekiel’s Wheels.

About This Film
The "Socalled" Movie
Meet Socalled (aka Josh Dolgin): musician, arranger, rapper, producer, composer, magician, filmmaker and visual artist, to name just a few of his talents! Blasting through boundaries separating different cultures, eras and generations, Socalled creates a wholly unique sound combining klezmer, funk, soul and hip-hop. Not too shabby for a nice Jewish boy from Montreal. This is a dynamic, kaleidoscopic portrait of an iconoclastic artist at the peak of his powers. Followed by live performance
Soft Boil
Lulu takes a job as a nanny only to discover that her new boss isn’t who she expected.
Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa
Abby Ginzburg’s powerful doc begins with footage of the aftermath of the car bombing that nearly took the life of South African activist Albie Sachs. The badly wounded Sachs, a fighter for racial equality since he was a teenager, went on to become a member of Nelson Mandela’s Constitutional Court. This inspiring chronicle highlights Sachs’s lifelong quest for justice, which eventually led to a meeting with the man who attempted to end his life.
Soldier on the Roof
This compelling documentary set in the Jewish settlement in Hebron on the West Bank, provides the viewer with a glimpse into the militant faith that fueled settler efforts to create their own community amid the city’s 120,000 Palestinian residents. By capturing the struggle between Muslims and Jews over land sacred to both faiths, the film serves as a poignant reminder of the long road that faces those committed to peaceful coexistence.

Something from Nothing
Based on Phoebe Gilman's award-winning bestseller, SOMETHING FROM NOTHING is a retelling of an old Jewish folktale. Grandpa, a poor tailor, celebrates the birth of his grandson, Joseph, by making the new baby a wonderful blue blanket. As Joseph grows, his beloved Grandpa transforms the blanket time after time into another useful garment. Thanks to Grandpa's creative presence, Joseph is able to establish and enjoy friendship, face challenges courageously and, ultimately, find his own voice.

About This Film
Song of Songs (2015)
Ukraine, 1905. Ten-year-old Shimek tells his darling Buzya fairy tales of the faraway, imprisoned Tsarevna, as their dreams of inhabiting a larger world beyond the shtetl blend with the first stirrings of young love. An inspired adaptation of the iconic stories from Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye the Dairyman (which also served as the source material for Fiddler on the Roof), a sense of wonder vibrates through the artfully composed Tarkovsky-like images of Hasidic village life. —Tien-Tien L. Spartacus
SFJFF Freedom of Expression honoree Kirk Douglas is gladiator Spartacus, leader of a slave revolt in pre-Christian Rome, in Stanley Kubrick’s restored widescreen spectacle. Two politically committed leftists, Jewish novelist Howard Fast and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, wrote and adapted this epic that went on to win four Academy Awards. In a heroic revolt of his own, star and producer Douglas insisted on giving rightful credit to Red Scare target Trumbo, effectively ending the Hollywood blacklist.
