BRIGHTON BEACH is a fond and loving portrait of the Brooklyn neighborhood known as the poor man's paradise. It juxtaposes a beauty contest for the elderly, stock footage of Coney Island in the 1930s, interviews with memorable locals of all ethnic persuasions, and a live concert of the incomparable Barry Sisters (a must for connoisseurs of Yiddish kitsch). Stein and Wittenberg's film is about survival, immigration, how the poor find pleasure, and how the melting pot will not melt. Above all, it is about dignity, humor, and freedom.
