Purity

This prize-winning film by an Israeli artist examines the Jewish laws and practices surrounding women’s sexuality. Filmmaker Anat Zuria began shooting six weeks following the birth of her daughter, in an effort to break open the silence surrounding the topic of Taharat HaMishpacha (family purity), religious laws that are often seen as imposed by men to shape women's lives. The filmmaker and her friends discuss their own struggles with observance and adaptation of traditional practices to their changing lives, exploring the meaning of purity to modern women.
