The Yellow Ticket

Filmed on location in Warsaw, this cinematic gem tells the story of a Jewish girl from a shtetl in the Pale of Settlement who must accept the degrading yellow ticket of a prostitute in order to live in St. Petersburg to study medicine. Studying by day and working in a brothel by night, she is hailed at the university as the brightest student, but her night-time activities are discovered by a fellow student with whom she is in love. This early cinematic work is of tremendous interest; it was produced in Warsaw during a period of political and military upheaval, and it features a newly "discovered" Polish actress, Pola Negri, who later became an international star under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch.
