Talented but broke musician Tala is a new mom with a beautiful baby girl and only her loving but opinionated mother to help. To support them all Tala takes a job at The Milky Way, a breast milk dairy that supplies families of means with nothing but the finest, purest nourishment for their babies’ optimum health. But Tala just can’t catch a break. When a small misstep gets her kicked out of the lactation industrial complex, she lands in the orbit of Nili, a wealthy mom who receives her milk from the service. Encountering mothers of all backgrounds, means, and temperaments, Tala tries to sort out her own feelings and priorities amid her misadventures.
Accomplished writer-director-editor Maya Kenig’s dryly funny feature centers a complex, multifaceted woman in a world that’s not quite today’s reality, but also doesn’t feel far off. Musician/actress Hila Ruach delivers a charismatic lead performance and also contributed to the original score. The Milky Way is an enjoyable voyage through the ups, downs, and in-betweens of motherhood. — Laura Henneman
