Genesis

The breathtakingly beautiful desert plains of Mali provide the setting for this unusual African epic, which may be seen not only as an allegory for the origins of conflict between Jews, Christians and Muslims, but as a profoundly modern and universal comment on fratricidal war in Rwanda and Burundi. The dense, unusual narrative combines the drama and gravity of Greek drama with the liveliness of African storytelling. Renowned African stage actor Sotigui Kouyaté stars as Jacob and the world-famous Malian singer Salif Keïta plays his brother Esau. 1999 Cannes Film Festival; 1999 Mill Valley Film Festival; 2000 Rotterdam Film Festival.
