I Love You, Rosa

Set in the 19th Century, I LOVE YOU, ROSA begins with recently widowed 21-year-old Rosa (Michal Bat-Adam) waiting in accordance with Judaic law for her husband's younger brother, 12-year-old Nissim, to attain maturity and either marry her or offer her haliza (freedom) to marry someone else. Nissim desires Rosa but Rosa is strikingly independent and demands haliza even though she loves him in return. There are decidedly Freudian overtones here, but this is not a simple mother-son love story. In the end, Rosa gets her freedom and her man. Best Foreign Film Nominee, 1972 Academy Awards.
