History (La Storia)

Italian director Luigi Comencini has brought the best-selling novel by Elsa Morante to the screen, unfurling an epic of war, love and sacrifice. Ida, a half-Jewish teacher, lives in occupied Rome with her two sons - Nino, a vital, brash, malcontent, and Useppe, a gentle, sensitive boy. When a bomb destroys their house, they move into a warehouse with a group of refugees who become like family. Through the eyes of this ensemble of anti-fascists, Jews, warmhearted prostitutes, pregnant teenagers, and domestic pets, we experience the catastrophic conditions of war and the small daily struggles facing people in their return to normalcy. With a bravura perfomance by Claudia Cardinale. 1987 Venice Film Festival.
