Full Description
In 1930, Amsterdam was an oasis of harmony for Jews and Gentiles, a model of cooperation between cultures. Bregstein's camera searches for what life was like in Amsterdam before World War II, before the annihilation of 100,000 of the city's Jewish population. We see Jewish diamond workers who led the struggle for socialism and the eight-hour work day, meet Jewish boxers who led the resistance against the Nazis. We hear from professors and playwrights, and encounter Portuguese synagogues near the vanished ghettos. This is a special film, made with intelligence and love for a lost community.
