In Search of the Bene Israel

Returning to her Jewish grandmother’s birthplace in India, director Sadia Shepard discovers the story of Bene Israel, a tiny Jewish community in Bombay. Her colorful documentary is a journey to reconnect with a group of Jews who believe they are descended from one of the lost tribes of Israel, shipwrecked in India 2,000 years ago.
From 2008 Festival: Director, United States Sadia Shepard is a documentary filmmaker and writer based in New York City. In 2001, she traveled to India on a Fulbright Scholarship to research and document the Bene Israel Jewish community. Her memoir about her experiences in India, The Girl from Foreign, will be published by The Penguin Press in July 2008. She is currently producing The September Issue, a feature-length documentary for A&E IndieFilms about Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue Magazine. She studied film at Stanford in the Graduate Program in Documentary Film and Video
