My Four Children

Nitza Gonen's film introduces us to Nelly Portuges, a mother who has suffered the loss of two of her four children. Her daughter Irit was killed in a terrorist attack on a bus, and her son Don was lost in a traffic accident. Sunken into despair, Nelly found the resolution to pull herself out by reaching out to children with Down's syndrome. Before long, she had four new children, all with the extra gene that leads to Down's. Her former husband and two natural daughters aren't sure how to take this new turn in Nelly's life, but her indomitable force buoys the entire family.
Having graduated in Television, Cinema and Literature from Paris and Tel-Aviv, Gonen has directed and produced a variety of television and cinematic projects, focusing on drama films and innovative documentaries, as well as concerts and opera events. Her films deal with human and social issues. Daddy Come to the Fair and Family Secrets bring out the inner life of Holocaust survivors and the second generation. In The Bunker, the hero, an Israeli artist, is obsessed, in his art, with Hitler. Israel today is seen through Dimonians, a series about people in the desert, and in My Four Children, a documentary about a woman who lost two of her children and chooses to adopt four children with Downs syndrome in spite of the protests of her family.
