SUNSET is loosely based on the Isaac Babel tales of Jewish gangsters in Odessa after the Revolution. A Jewish SATYRICON, SUNSET races through time, weaving the biblical story of David and Absalom with a twentieth century Odessa tale of a father whose son has gone astray. In marked contrast to most Soviet depictions of Jews as shtetl intellectuals and weaklings, SUNSET presents an image of Jews that is closer to Hollywood's version of Chicago mobsters. The film's striking imagery includes the Tower of Babel, a lavish Ukrainian-Jewish wedding, bawdy sexual fantasies, and riveting shoot-outs. Director Zeldovich is an amazing talent whose vision is surreal, humorous and strikingly original. This is a one-of-a-kind film.
