In Austria at the turn of the century residents of a Jewish shtetl are harassed by Russians and Austrians. The political situation forms the backdrop for the romance between the chief rabbi's daughter, Lea, and a Russian prince, Constantine. SURRENDER evokes shtetl life and Jewish customs with memorable scenes such as Lea hiding from Constantine amidst the Torah scrolls, the village mob denouncing Lea as a harlot, and Prince Constantine's return to Lea as a "comrade" after the Revolution!
