Full Description
THE ANGEL LEVINE, based on the Bernard Malamud story, was directed by Czechoslovakian-born Jan Kadar, also known for his films THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET and LIES MY FATHER TOLD ME. Zero Mostel plays an impoverished old Jew whose wife (Ida Kaminska) is slowly dying. Harry Belafonte is a tough black angel in a leather jacket who is sent to Mostel as his guardian. The white Jew needs to overcome his prejudices in order to obtain a miracle and the black angel needs someone to believe in him. This is a great film that was a box-office disaster, probably because it was way ahead of its time.
