The Last Frontier

Walter Benjamin, a German Jewish philosopher and critic who fused late German Romanticism, Marxism, and Kabbala, was also an intellectual secret agent fascinated by everything from Baudelaire to the revolutionary potential of popular film. THE LAST FRONTIER, which deals with Benjamin's life and work, is really three films in one. In dramatic sequences it portrays the crossing of war refugee Benjamin from France into Spain in 1940. In documentary form it includes interviews with friends and artists who knew him. Finally, playing with film and video images in a kind of surrealistic montage, it presents some of Benjamin's most challenging ideas in the form of a visual poem. THE LAST FRONTIER is an extraordinary film which stays true to one of the finest, most original critics of the 20th century.
