Theme

A cynical, moving, and funny look at a middle-aged playwright, Kim Yesenin (played with grumpy bravado by the famous Russian actor Mikhail Ulyanov), who is coming to terms with the fact that he has sold out. Kim wants to win the respect of the lovely Sasha, a gentle and intelligent interpreter, but she is deeply in love with a Jewish writer who has decided to emigrate to Israel. On the shelf for seven years because of its attack on the opportunism of the "intelligentsia," and because of its taboo subplot (emigration), THEME was released in 1986. Golden Bear, 1987 Berlin Film Festival.
