Thou Shalt Not Hate

WEST COAST PREMIERE

The story of THOU SHALL NOT HATE (NON ODIARE) is set in a city in the northeast, a Central European non-place, a combination of heterogeneous history, different ethnic groups, and its Jewish community has deep roots. Here, in the old town, lives Simone Segre (Alessandro Gassmann, the son of legendary Italian actor Vittorio Gassmann), an established surgeon of Jewish origin: he has a quiet, regular, smooth life, an elegant apartment. He has no ties to the past. The harsh disagreements with his father, a recently deceased concentration camp veteran, have led him to turn away from him since several years now. One day, returning from his weekly rowing training, Simone rescues a man who has been the victim of a hit-and-run driver. But when he discovers a Nazi tattoo on his chest, he has to make a choice about saving this man’s life. In the following days, Simone will track down the neo-Nazi family who lives in a popular suburban complex: Marica, the eldest daughter (Sara Serraiocco); Marcello (Luka Zunic), in his first leading role as co-star, the teenage son also infected by the seed of racial hatred; the "little" Paolo (Lorenzo Buonora). The night will come when Marica will knock on Simone's door, forcing him to face the consequences of his actions.
With this award-winning small cast (lauded at Venice International Film Festival), director Mauro Mancini elegantly creates a cinematic experience challenging the characters’ morality in the face of their conflicting ideologies. By doing so, he sheds new cinematic light on the Italian Jewish community and Holocaust victims and survivors, reigniting a dialogue that had in recent years had only so rarely appeared on the map of Italian mainstream culture.
