True to Life

Veteran Israeli producer Moshe Levinson (who also produced this year’s 5 Days) created this funny, hip documentary series by and about youth from the Israeli city of Ramla. Many are immigrants or the children f immigrants, and their stories are filled with bravado, disappointment and dreams. All of the films were directed and filmed by the youths themselves, providing an authentic look at the trials and troubles of adolescence. Love on the Brink explores a young man’s jealousy and his love for cars; I’m Just 18 profiles an earnest Palestinian woman pursuing her education; Plague of the First Born looks at sibling rivalry and being stereotyped as the bad kid; Motherless Haya tells of an Ethiopian Israeli girl whose mother died in childbirth; Accept Me presents a young Russian Israeli who struggles with her parents and her body image; and Just So shows the acculturation of a teenage girl whose Israeli life is different from that of her traditional Bukharian parents.
