Would I Lie to You?

This romantic comedy set in a Tunisian Jewish garment-manufacturing clan struck a nerve in French popular culture, becoming France’s highest-grossing native film of all time. Brimming with intrigue and beautiful young actors, the action revolves around a Cinderella story of mistaken identity. Edouard (Richard Anconina), a down-and-out gentile seeking employment in the Sentier (the legendary Paris garment district) is mistaken for a Jew. When the observant North Africans who take him in discover he knows nothing about Judaism, they assume he is Ashkenazi (European Jewish). Suddenly, Eddy finds himself employed, surrounded by “family” and in love with the boss’s daughter (Amira Casar). A hilarious, ribald and twisted tale ensues in which love proves thicker than blood, which may be thicker than water.
