Thank You and Goodnight

THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT explores the mysteries of life and death by blending cinema verité with humorous theatricality. "I started to make a movie about my grandmother, and then she got sick and died" Oxenberg says. The adult Jan searches her memory, outer space, the afterlife, the psychiatrist's couch, and an old movie palace, trying to ponder the imponderable. Combines documentary footage shot over a ten-year period with dramatic re-enactments featuring a cardboard cut-out figure of director Jan Oxenberg as a questioning five-year-old. Entertaining and thought-provoking, soul-searching and funny, sentimental and rigorously skeptical, the tone of the film and the star quality performance of the grandmother are remarkable in this wonderful award-winning film.
