First Convoy

One of the few films to challenge French denial of involvement with war crimes, this film traces the steps of the first 1,200 Jews deported from France to Auschwitz in 1942. They are a mixed group that includes a Polish violinist, an urban Parisian, and a Yiddish-speaking German Jew who fought in the Spanish Civil War. They display a wide spectrum of attitudes about history: one is willing to forgive, another is not. For all, the film is a mission of recovery, a reminder of the importance of bearing witness.
