Echo

How well do we really know the people we love? Directors Amikam Kovner and Assar Snir deftly address this question in Echo, which introduces us to Avner and Ella, a seemingly happy couple with two children. Avner, an engineer, is dealing with a crisis at work when a tunnel collapses. Ella, a clinical psychiatrist, faces a crisis of her own with significant ramifications for their relationship. Despite their beautiful home and family, something is not quite right between the couple. A random traffic ticket leads Avner to suspect his wife is having an affair. He begins to record her telephone calls and obsessively listen to her conversations. The woman revealed through these calls is a stranger to him, and Avner is launched on a quest to learn more. As his search deepens, Avner confronts his own limits as a husband and a father. Ultimately, Avner's search reveals as much about himself as his wife. Echo is at times a tense thriller, a family drama and a lamentation about mortality. Superbly acted (Yael Abecassis and Yoram Toledano both starred in Prisoners of War, the Israeli forerunner to Homeland) and engrossingly paced, Echo illuminates the joy and the pain of married life. - Stephanie Rapp
