Silent Witness

Nearly 50 years after the liberation of Dachau and Auschwitz, director Wichin returned to capture the haunting spirit of these sites. Initially the filmmaker sought to explore without judgment the questions raised in the international controversy over the convent built by Carmelite nuns at Auschwitz. The film became a poetic exploration of the people who live and work on the sites today: a Hungarian Jewish survivor at Dachau, a Polish survivor who never left Auschwitz, a German tour guide, and a Carmelite nun. With a moody and elegant soundtrack, SILENT WITNESS draws our attention to the inextricable ties among human beings, place, and remembrance.
