TAKE ACTION DAY: ACTIVIST FILMMAKING TO REPAIR THE WORLD PART OF THE 38TH SAN FRANCISCO JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL

SAN FRANCISCO, June 19, 2018 - The Jewish Film Institute (JFI) is pleased to present the fifth annual Take Action Day as part of the 38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. The program, a full day of illuminating documentaries that take their cue from the Jewish value of tikkun olam, will take place all day on Friday, July 27th at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. Each film will be followed by discussions with filmmakers and representatives from community organizations who are making a difference with their work. Award winning filmmaker and former JFI Filmmaker in Residence Nicole Opper will led these stimulating panel discussions.
Environmentalism, health and corporate accountability, unbridled scientific creativity, gender inequality, and criminal justice and the legal response to cyber stalking are just some of the pressing issues raised in this grouping of buzzed-about documentaries. THE DEVIL WE KNOW: West Coast Premiere - 11:00AM
Kristen Lazure and Stephanie Soechtig's expose about the materials that lie beneath the surface of our most common household items is the focus of THE DEVIL WE KNOW. An official selection of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, the film takes viewers to Parkersburg, West Virginia, ground zero for the impact of the chemicals used in Dupont's Teflon, and the toxic chemicals found in the area.
THE END OF MEAT - 1:30PM
A path forward to a healthier, cruelty-free lifestyle is examined in Marc Pierschel's THE END OF MEAT. With interviews from scientists creating meat in petri dishes, to lovers of seaweed that tastes like bacon, the film is no just for vegans and vegetarians but also for anyone interested in eating less meat.
NETIZENS: West Coast Premiere - 4:05PM
A profile of three powerful women who, as survivors of cyber harassment, become the advocates they need to be to change laws and opinions around online privacy. With director Cynthia Lowen and subject Anita Sarkeesian in person.
SCIENCE FAIR - 6:45PM
Winner of the first ever Festival Favorite Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, SCIENCE FAIR follows an extraordinary cadre of teenage scientists working to change the world and competing in the 2017 edition of Intel's International Science Engineering Fair (ISEF). Directors Cristina Costantini and Darren Foster will be present for the screening.
THE SENTENCE - 9:15PM
Winner of the Documentary Audience Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, THE SENTENCE is a piercing examination of the consequences of mandatory minimum sentences on a mother and her family. Director Rudy Valdez follows his sister Cindy Shank, a wife and mother of three young daughters who is arrested on drug conspiracy charges, a result of her involvement with a drug-dealing former boyfriend, and the devastating impact her 15 year sentence in federal prison had on the family.
